HOME IS MAKING A RETURN
For time immemorial , home has been a place to return to , a sanctum with a front door to separate ourselves from everything else outside . Covid confined millions to their homes overnight , turning them into offices , gyms and playgrounds . Repainting the walls , rearranging the bookshelves and reupholstering cushions may not be able to make us shake the feeling that we ’ ve seen it all before . But now we ’ re – hopefully – emerging on the other side of the pandemic , how do we repossess our homes ? “ We need to open up the conversation around homes as workplaces ,” says Sonia , “ and make space for the things we love . Covid pushed the limits of what home can be and there ’ s something wonderful about that .” At the Museum of Home there is a 1759 letter from a man who had recently moved to London from the Midlands , complaining about how the city is expensive and dirty and that he misses his mother ’ s cooking . Our relationship to material culture , our ability to have things , or our understanding of comfort and privacy may change . But the fundamentals of home remain the same : it ’ s a place of safety and security , where food is on the table and you ’ re surrounded
